Dynamic Cricket Wicket Construction Specification for use with our County Weave & Tufted Turf carpets and pads

Full Match Wicket: 30m x 2.74m

Where ground conditions are suitable, typically level sites where the turf is well established and the ground has been well rolled such as on the edge of the cricket square or a well maintained outfield, then our STANDARD BASE should be suitable. Here the dynamic base can be installed simply over a geotextile after cutting out the turf.

Where these conditions do not exist such as uneven sites, rough un-maintained grass, or soft ground it would be necessary to consider our FULL DEPTH BASE involving carrying out a deeper excavation to allow a stone raft to be installed on which to lay the dynamic base. If the ground is very uneven it may be necessary to install treated timber edging boards as part of the construction in order to get a level playing surface. The timber should also be considered on sites where vandalism could be a problem in order to provide a securer edge fixing for the playing surface.

Standard Base

• Mark out the area of the excavation, size 29m x 2.5m
• Excavate the base evenly to a depth of 50mm and consolidate the base of the excavation with a vibrating plate or roller.
• Lay Terram 1000 or similar geotextile membrane into the base of the excavation.
• Import, spread, level, and consolidate 50mm of suitable graded hard porous aggregate with vibrating plate or roller, adding water as necessary to achieve a hard flat base.
• If conventional stumps are to be used, locate position of stumps, excavate aggregate approx. 400mm x 100mm, and pack with heavy clay soil level with the top of the aggregate.
• Roll the polyester base pad out over the aggregate and pin into the stone around the perimeter at 500mm centres with 100mm long galvanised clout nails. Cut out sections of pad over clay stump areas if applicable.
• Roll out the playing surface and position squarely and centrally over the base.
• Tension the playing surface lengthways and pin carpet ends into the turf at 150mm centres with 100mm long galvanised clout nails. If necessary cut and ramp the ends of the playing surface into the turf to avoid any tripping edges.
• Slightly tension the playing surface widthways and pin carpet ends into the turf at 150mm centres with 100mm long galvanised clout nails.

Full Depth Base

• Mark out the area of the excavation, size 29m x 2.5m
• Excavate the base evenly to a depth of 150mm and consolidate the base of the excavation with a vibrating plate or roller.
• Lay Terram 1000 or similar geotextile membrane into the base of the excavation.
• Import, spread, level, and consolidate 100mm of 10mm or 12mm to dust aggregate or similar with vibrating plate or roller.
• Import, spread, level, and consolidate 50mm of suitable graded hard porous aggregate with vibrating plate or roller, adding water as necessary to achieve a hard flat base.
• If conventional stumps are to be used, locate position of stumps, excavate aggregate approx. 400mm x 100mm, and pack with heavy clay soil level with the top of the aggregate.
• Roll the polyester base pad out over the aggregate and pin into the stone around the perimeter at 500mm centres with 100mm long galvanised clout nails. Cut out sections of pad over clay stump areas if applicable.

Full Depth Base with Timber Edgings

• Mark out the area of the excavation, size 29.8m x 2.7m
• Excavate the base evenly to a depth of 150mm and consolidate the base of the excavation with a vibrating plate or roller.
• Install 25mm x 150mm nominal treated timber edging boards secured with 50mm x 50mm x 300mm treated timber pegs at max. 1.5m centres to the perimeter of the excavation. The boards should be laid level or to the agreed acceptable falls and levels to best suit the surrounding outfield. The pegs should be on the inside of the edging boards and the top of the peg set 50mm below the top of the edging board.
• Lay Terram 1000 or similar geotextile membrane into the base of the excavation.
• Import, spread, level, and consolidate 100mm of 10mm or 12mm to dust aggregate or similar with vibrating plate or roller
• Import, spread, level, and consolidate 50mm of suitable graded hard porous aggregate with vibrating plate or roller, adding water as necessary to achieve a hard flat base.
• If conventional stumps are to be used, locate position of stumps, excavate aggregate approx. 400mm x 100mm, and pack with heavy clay soil level with the top of the aggregate.
• Roll the polyester base pad out over the aggregate and pin into the stone around the perimeter at 500mm centres with 100mm long galvanised clout nails. Cut out sections of pad over clay stump areas if applicable.
• Roll out the playing surface and position squarely and centrally over the base.
• Tension the playing surface lengthways and pin carpet ends into the edging boards at 150mm centres with 50mm long galvanised clout nails.
• Slightly tension the playing surface widthways and pin carpet ends into the edging boards at 150mm centres with 50mm long galvanised clout nails.
• Backfill with soil/seed around the perimeter up to the edging boards. The loose ends of playing surface can be tucked down the sides of the boards before backfilling if required.

Please note that we do not allow for the following:

• Marking creases.
• Making stump holes through playing surface.
• Any adjustments to the levels of the field adjacent to the installed wicket as a result of work being carried out as instructed.
• The reinstatement of any other grass areas affected by the installation including storage and access areas.
• Dispose of excavated soil/turf unless otherwise agreed.
